Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Show Your Bones (CD Review)

I have been looking forward to this release for some time. ‘Fever To Tell’, the debut album from Yeah Yeah Yeahs was a spiky, emotional, angular and satisfying record in so many ways. I was hoping for much the same from ‘Show Your Bones’ and I have not been disappointed. Some of the edge has gone as the production on the album is ‘better’, more polished and some of the rough edges have been smoothed in the process. As I am fond of rough edges on a band this is something I have to deal with a lot and looking at the songs underneath I can see that they are still as stroppy, jagged and off kilter as ever. I will be waiting for a gig or a live album to get some of those edges back.

The emotion is still there as well, Karen carries it so well in her vocals and the boys translate it brilliantly into furious outbursts or spaciously thoughtful interludes as required. There are plenty of opportunities to get caught up in the tension that is so often magically released with a blasting chorus. May YYY make many more albums, I never doubted them for a minute…
