The Divine Comedy – Absent Friends

Label : Parlophone
Website :

Released : March 29th
Rating : +++

Having disbanded last year, The Divine Comedy now consists only of Neil Hannon, though he is not without help. Long-standing collaborator Joby Talbot scored the orchestral arrangements (which are many and grand), whilst XFM DJ and ex-Kenickie vocalist provides guest vocals on the first single from the album Come Home Billy Bird (out March 22nd) and Amelie soundtrack composer Yann Tiersen adds some accordion to Sticks & Stones.

I have to say, I have never formed a final and all-encompasing opinion on The Divine Comedy and nothing has changed with this album. At first I thought I didn’t like Come Home Billy Bird but now I can’t get it out of my head and the first time I listened to this album I didn’t think I liked it but now I’m starting to think that these orchestral pop songs might just have something.
