Stereolab – Margerine Eclipse

‘Margerine Eclipse’ is Stereolab’s first full album since the tragic passing of band member Mary Hansen. The band (Laetitia Sadier, Tim Gane, Andy Ramsay, Simon Johns, with Dominic Jeffrey (keyboards) and we also see the return of their erstwhile contributor, Sean O’Hagan) has recently built themselves a studio from which they have been busy.

The album itself has echoes of Stereolab past, as in ‘Margerine Rock’ for example, and an easy, bright and seductive tone. These songs conjure up 60’s and 70’s chic, modern pop, classic electronica and a slice of rock for good measure. ‘Margerine Eclipse’ will have you wondering how a band can come over as so left field, while never straying to far from conventions. The particular combinations of instruments, their choice of vocal style (and language) and the sense of fun and pleasure they imbue every song with combine, with apparent serendipity, into splendid and beautiful music.

If you can listen to this album and not have your spirits raised, then there may be no hope for you.
