Sixtoo – Chewing On Glass And Other Miracle Cures

After four months working on the follow-up to his previous album, Duration, which he wanted to sound more like a live band than his earlier work, Sixtoo hit a rut and realised he wasn’t happy with where he was going and needed to completely rethink his methods. The click came on his 29th birthday, when his girlfriend bought him a Fender Rhodes piano. A year later, after some experimentation, work began on the recording of this album, Chewing Glass And Other Miracle Cures.

This is mainly a solo work but Sixtoo was aided by Matt Kelly when his musical proficiency failed him and guest appearances also come from the likes of Can’s Damo Suzuki, Norsola and Thierry from Godspeed You Black Emperor, Eric Craven from The Hanged Up and Shane Ward – the girlfriend who originally got the whole thing started.

The end result is an amazing mix of hip hop, jazz and rock. In some places the instrumentation has been sampled and cut up, in others it’s all put down live and it achieves the intended live band feel whilst also being highly innovative and endlessly interesting. Those of you interested in recording will go mad for this not just because of the music but also for the liner notes that detail how each track was put together. This is essential listening (and reading).
