Sigur Ros – Takk… (CD Review)

There are expectations that come with an album release from Sigur Ros; a standard in fragile beauty, a stretched sound that seems to warp time and an otherworldliness that is as beguiling as it can be incomprehensible. I expect to be carried along on delicate and emotive threads, well woven and impeccably judged. In short, I should be drifting off into a world of my own by their making.

I want to be stirred by protracted crescendos, lulled in a warming embrace by diaphanous strings and drawn into the ebb and flow of intricate percussive patterns and to marvel at the purity of the falsetto that sings words I cannot comprehend. The richness of the production should make every sound something to savour.

Thankfully, Sigur Ros have managed to do just that. ‘Takk…’ is a work of beauty and depth that can strip away your day and refresh your soul. There are moments of great intensity that gather around you like a storm and sweet ethereal passages that tug at your heartstrings. This is a wonderful album.
