Roots Manuva – Colossal Insight (CD Review)

Roots Manuva has taken ‘Colossal Insight’ from his new album ‘Awfully Deep’ (due out on 31st January ’05). Never one to be cornered into a single style or sound, this new single has a squelching and bleep fuelled topping to the bass and beats. Whirling around these sounds in a confidently laid back mood is Rodney Smith himself musing on his new son, his new role, his history and his future.

Combined, these make for a gentle take on the hip-hop theme, and a song that worms its way into your psyche after a few listens. There are a myriad of mixes available to suit all tastes with Royskopp energising it without losing it’s vibe, Jammer adding a broken beats dancehall flavour and the Soft Pink Truth remix playing with space and time to great effect (all, and more, available on the CD2 version).
