Polysics – New Wave Jacket / My Sharona (CD Review)

Tokyo’s most mental of pop/rock/new wave/punk experimentalists are releasing a double A-side of their own ‘New Wave Jacket’ and a cover of The Knack’s ‘My Sharona’. In ‘New Wave Jacket’ Polysics combine Shonen Knife style vocals with punk screams, robotized choruses, guitar solos and keyboard weirdness into a brilliantly vibrant song whose meaning may not be clear but it won’t half get you dancing.

For the second A-side Polysics give us a cover version that is so far removed from the original it is almost unrecognisable until the disparate chords are pulled together and the robot begin to sing again. It becomes a frantic bastardisation of the original that is as strange as it is brilliant.
