Mogwai – Friend Of The Night (CD Review)

With the fifth studio album, entitled ‘Mr Beast’ and due out on the 6th March, hoving into view over the horizon Mogwai are release ‘Friend Of The Night’ to whet our appetites. There is a gentle undulation of guitars and piano pegged down by the languid, yet solid drums. Before long the piano becomes more strident and the song takes on a more complex and intense air. Throughout the gently paced track there are pulls on the listeners emotional strings that finally build into an all encompassing blur of tuneful noise and well crafted melodies hidden within.

‘Friend Of The Night’ cannot be heard at regular volumes and demands to be turned up in order to receive the full power of the music. If this is at all representative of ‘Mr Beast’ then Mogwai are going to unleash a potential classic.
