Lucky Jim – Lesbia (CD Review)

Lucky Jim end the year that brought us a debut album (‘Our Troubles End Tonight’) as well as a successful string of gigs and festival slots from the Brighton balladeers, with a new EP. ‘Lesbia’ creates an intimate atmosphere from the taut plucking and gentle strums that introduce Gordon Graham’s voice. His singing has a rich and worn patina that draws your attention in and then gentle strings and piano come in to lift the emotional levels even higher.

In addition to the title track, as its radio edit, there is a cover of ‘Hallelujah’ a song best known in association with Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley as well as a taster of the new album (due in Spring 2005). This taster comes in the form of ‘Somewhere Up Ahead’ which takes the form of a symphonic country rock – the vocals and guitars have the country feel but the strings and the organ/keyboard sounds make an unusual but not in any way unpleasant combination.
