As time goes by, I become part of an ever decreasing proportion of the population who miss the old Idlewild. Sure, these days they’re much more proficient musicians but a lot of the excitement has gone from their songs.

Love Steals Us From Loneliness is instantly recognisable as Idlewild because of Roddy Woomble’s distinctive voice and lyrical style but the metamorphosis into REM is almost complete now.

New album Warnings/Promises is sure to be the one that really pushes Idlewild into the mainstream but it’ll be interesting to see how many older fans they keep.
