Grand National – Cherry Tree

Hot on the heels of their excellent debut album (‘Kicking The National Habit’- Buy it from Amazon) the National are letting loose one of the indisputable highlights it contains. ‘Cherry Tree’ is, like all good pop records, about sex and love (although more about sex to be honest). The euphemisms are obscure to say the least but the jaunty tempo and falsetto singing drive this track in such a way that it is impossible not to dance to it.

To accompany ‘Cherry Tree’ are a couple of examples of Grand National in more mellow form. ‘Lay Me Down’ is especially good and has an unexpected Nick Drake quality combined with the classy pop of The Kinks.
