Elliott Smith – Pretty (Ugly Before) (7” Review)

‘Pretty (Ugly Before)’ is the first single to be taken from the late Elliott’s critically acclaimed last album (‘From A Basement On The Hill’). It is being released as a 7″ only single, and coincides with the re-release of three early Elliott Smith albums – ‘Roman Candle’, ‘Elliott Smith’ and ‘Either/Or’. ‘From A Basement On The Hill’ is being seen as an ‘Album of the Year’ in many quarters after receiving high praise from journals as diverse as NME, Uncut, Guardian and the Sunday Times.

This is a fine example of the darkly beautiful style that Elliott Smith created throughout his career. The air of fatigue and spent options is evoked wonderfully by these crafted lyrics while the subdued and countrified rock that accompanies them gives rise to a strength and sense of hope. ‘Pretty (Ugly Before)’ finely balances these elements with an apparent ease that is the sign of songwriter that will be sorely missed.
