Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (CD Review)

Based around the songs of Alec Ounsworth in Philadelphia, and subsequently remoulded into full tracks by the band as a whole in New York the sound of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is a mix of indie, introspection, and new wave that sits pleasantly on the ear. If you can imagine a proper punk band, all a blur in a frenzy of spitting, pogo madness and ANL badges and then have them get so tired that they are playing in a haze of delirium – then you have the sound of the upbeat numbers. If you then imagine they remain permanently cracked by the experience, developing curious musical ideas and transcribing them faithfully to tape, then you have many of the other numbers.

It is a curiously compelling listen and you are never sure what each new track will deliver. There are comparisons to be made with the vocals of Thom York circa ‘Pablo Honey’, only with slightly less range. Musically, they are somehow out of time and remind me of a great many alternative bands of the late eighties and early nineties. When all of this is put together you get some gems, some curios and a need to hear it all again to be sure.
