Camera Obscura – Underachievers Please Try Harder

Glaswegian 7-piece Camera Obscura are spinners of vintage yarns, saluting the folk of the sixties and the sweet innocence of the fifties on the way. This album is seemingly effortless mixing of worldly-wise acceptance of the vicissitudes of life and an almost childlike portrayal of the same. In these songs hearts are worn proudly on sleeves through tales of misfit-ery, awkwardness and love affairs that end badly (or hardly start at all). All of this is backed by some wonderful tunes that would give Pizzicato 5 (The worlds happiest band if you don’t know them) a run for their money in the pure joy stakes. ‘Underachievers Please Try Harder’ contains the recent single ‘Teenager’, which grooves along with a real Shangri Las feel while gently plucked accompaniment and ever spooky theramin create a real feeling of otherworldliness. Fans of Belle & Sebastian, Yo La Tengo, Arab Strap or Frankie Machine will relish this whole album for its simplicity, beauty and unabashed outsider chic.
