Annie – Always Too Late (Download / 12” Review)

‘Always Too Late’ is part of the series of collaborations between tracks from the Norwegian Annie’s album ‘Anniemal’ and various remixers, all curated by London DJ Erol Alkan and available on limited edition blue 12″ and as downloads. The combination of Joakim’s dub beats and sparse hand claps along with snatches of Annie’s vocal to tease into the song proper is magically constructed. The warping of sounds and intensifying pulses create a kind of trance that is extremely intoxicating. Joakim also provides a vocal mix that is similar but high with clipped tones and, of course, more of Annie’s rapid, flowing words.

Also available is Patrick Wolf’s comparatively spaced and flat toned reworking of ‘Helpless Fool For Love’ that results in a mix that evokes Ladytron in a romantic mood. There are seemingly distant electronic sounds that lighten the bass heavy theme while the Celtic style strings add pathos.
