Cortney Tidwell – Cortney Tidwell (CD Review)

Cortney Tidwell has a deliciously fragile and lavishly theatrical collection of songs to share on her eponymous mini-album. She combines the otherworldliness of bands like Múm with the mellow dramatics of Mazzy Star while going beyond the scope of either. She has included dance beats, left field samples, folk refrains, echoes of country and western, vocal effects and old fashioned good song-writing to create a real treat for the ears.

From the beats and strange melodies in ‘Mama From The Mountain’ and ‘Hard 2 Tell’, through the gentle luxury of ‘Drink Up’ and ‘The Light’ and beyond into the compelling slow country of ‘So I’ll Go Out and Meet My Love’ and the experimental and airy ‘Fever Queen’ this is a joy to listen to and dissolve into.
