Pogues re-release to highlight ongoing Kirsty MacColl investigation

Now, you may know that the Pogues are planning to re-release the best Christmas song ever, ‘Fairy Tale Of New York’, on 19 Dec, but according to femalefirst.co.uk the re-release was actually conceived as a way to draw attention to, and put more pressure on, the Mexican authorities, who, following their initially conclusive investigations into Kirsty MacColl’s death, have now agreed to re-open the case.

The single is being released to coincide with the fifth anniversary of MacColl’s death. When the singer was killed by a speedboat whilst swimming in Cozumel in Mexico, a deckhand was fined for causing the accident, but Kirsty’s relatives suspect it was actually the son of a wealthy supermarket owner who was steering at the time of the incident, and McColl’s mother Jean wants him charged with homicide.

According to the website, Pogue Spider Stacy said: “The single isn’t about making money. It’s about justice for Kirsty. Jean has spent the last five years trying to get at the truth and she is making good headway. But the guy in question is one of the richest men in Mexico and is able to buy the best lawyers. When I first heard of the campaign, I didn’t see the point. It’s all an uphill task and Jean is an old lady. But I was wrong. She is getting close to finding justice for Kirsty.”
