Cut Copy – Bright Like Neon Love (CD Review)

If you took every major electropop, new wave and old school indie record from the eighties and distilled their essence into a single album then you’d have wasted your time; Cut Copy have beaten you to it. To me ‘Bright Like Neon Love’ is like time travelling. I am thrown twenty years into the past to relive effects laden guitars, squelchy synths, early house drum machines and theatrically disinterested new romantic vocals. Some of the tracks work extremely well but there are times when, almost unavoidably given the retro styling, you really feel you have heard it all before.

For all that, this is a very listenable album that clearly has the dancefloor in its sights. Once the deja vu subsides and the songs can speak for themselves the heavy bass and solid beats are irresistible.
