Shock rocker Marilyn Manson has marked his retirement from music by scooping the coveted Icon Award at the 12th annual Kerrang! Awards. Manson, who recently announced he was turning his back on music to become a movie star and director, received the trophy in front of a VIP audience of rock Gods at The Brewery in Central London on Thursday August 25th 2005.

American rockers Green Day, riding high on their 7 million worldwide sales of latest album ‘American Idiot’, were big winners, bagging two Kerrang! Awards for Best Band on the Planet and Best Live Act. Accepting the awards frontman Billie Joe said: “Thank you very much for voting us best live band. We’re drinking in your honour now. Thanks and thanks and thanks, whoever has the biggest hangover tomorrow should get an award next year.”

New Jersey five piece My Chemical Romance also bagged two Awards: Best Video for ‘Helena’ and Best Album for the million plus selling ‘Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge’. Continuing the run of success for U.S bands, Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters were worthy recipients of the Best Single Award for ‘Best of You’. The award was presented by Queen’s Roger Taylor and glamour girl Sophie Howard. The highly respected Best International Newcomer gong went to Orlando’s Trivium, who have already declared that they intend to be the biggest rock band on the planet.

Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor received the classic songwriter award for his unique take on industrial rock which he has been pioneering for more than 20 years. He said: “I sit down to write a song and it’s just me just trying to be as honest as I can for myself and to see that something connects with, someone in the outside world, is a really cool feeling. Thanks to Kerrang! for sticking around and believing in what I do.”

Whilst the American contingent were celebrating their success, Wales dominated the domestic bands Awards with Funeral for A Friend stealing the Best British Band crown, and Bullet For My Valentine, recent stars of the Kerrang! Day of Rock at the Virgin Megastore, being named Best British Newcomer.

British rock legends Iron Maiden entered the Kerrang! Hall of Fame and vocalist Bruce Dickenson swung by to collect the Award on his way to their headline appearances at the Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals. A brand new trophy ‘The Lifetime Achievement Award – was presented to the inimitable Killing Joke.

The Kerrang! Awards are the biggest and baddest awards in the rock calendar. Guests this year included the Foo Fighters, Roger Taylor from Queen, Korn, Fightstar, Jimmy Mistry, Feeder and Stereophonics. Everybody partied till the small hours and another legendary night was had.

Presenters Juliette Lewis and Stuart Cable kept everybody in order and made sure proceedings went smoothly … well, as smoothly as you can ever keep 500 of the craziest, loudest and outrageous guests.
