Antony & The Johnsons stunning album I Am Bird Now was recently announced as being among the twelve nominees on this year’s Mercury Music Prize shortlist. No, the Mercury board hasn’t made a terrible mistake and nominated an American – Antony was born in Chichester and settled in New York in 1990. Antony & the Johnsons had released one eponymous album to date before I Am A Bird Now came out on Rough Trade Records in March 2005.
Alongside an avalanche of critical acclaim for his astonishing vocal and songwriting talents, Antony has appeared on Later With Jools Holland and the Culture Show on BBC2. He has sold out the Queen Elizabeth Hall on two occasions, including a performance at Patti Smith’s Meltdown, and also achieved a sold-out UK tour in June.
Rough Trade will release a download-only version of For Today I Am a Boy on 5th September 2005.
Antony will be returning to the UK in November for a full set of UK dates (and Dublin) to round off an extraordinary year. Details below. Tickets are available from ticketmaster.co.uk here.
