Fatboy Slim – Don’t Let The Man (CD Review)

Fatboy Slim’s latest is based around a country (well, US folk music anyway) vocal sample and a gentle backing, although eminently danceable as you would expect. The mood conveyed is one of sixties rebellion, ‘Damn the man’ and all that. As countrified dance appears to be making itself a little niche at the moment with Alabama 3 and Buck 65 touring new material this would seem to be a prime time to let this song get a wider airing.

The theme continues with ‘Mi Bebe Masoquista’ although it is broken almost immediately by a more hard core electronica surfacing. Theme or not this song still rocks and breaks expertly.

Broken Dolls – Rock And Roll / So Good For Me (Download Review)

This AA side download single is a slice of good solid blues rock. They are the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club mixed with squelchy keyboards and soaring vocals and, especially in ‘So Good For Me’, there is a skuzzy prog that works its way in to make for an anthemic sound.

If you desire a physical copy of the single then you are going to have to get to one of the NME Club nights, or in fact any other gig they are performing at, that is where they are sold.

Be Your Own Pet – Fire Department (CD Review)

After setting SXSW alight with their punk rock the criminally young (they are all still at school in Nashville) Be Your Own Pet are releasing the brassy, defiant and catchy as hell ‘Fire Department’. Jemina Pearl, with a voice and attitude that should belong to a woman 10 years her senior, screams and yelps perfectly alongside the edgy guitars and vibrant bass and crashing drums. If I didn’t know better then I would never have thought this to be the work of 15-16 year olds, this is mature stuff and brilliant with it.

‘Fire Department’ is backed with the equally accomplished ‘Take That Walk’ and the fiery ‘Hillmont Avenue’. I am looking forward to catching them play the John Peel tent at Glastonbury, but if you are not going to be there then they are announcing a UK tour soon, make sure you catch them.
