Maximo Park – A Certain Trigger (CD Review)

Maximo Park play a mixture of rock, electro and new wave that is bright, punchy and very personal to singer Paul Smith. There are debts to pop and ska, punk and more that are all mixed up into a brilliant package. Along with the many influences this album has there is a great sense of performance. It is as if each song were a scene from a much larger work.

The album contains the debut and follow up single (‘Apply Some Pressure’ and ‘Graffiti’) as well as equally jaunty tracks like ‘Postcard of a Painting’ and ‘The Night I Lost My Head’ and more eccentric numbers like (appropriately) ‘Now I’m All Over The Shop’.

It is just as well that the songs on ‘A Certain Trigger’ work as well as they do, because it could easily have failed and been a horribly introspective mess of style and genre. Flair and good songwriting have shone through on this brilliant debut.
