The Kills – The Good Ones (Streaming Video)

New single released on Domino on Feb 7th.

“Took a car to the part of the city, where the city runs out of street lights…God knows, it’s the way that it goes that we’re never going to catch any daylight….My little sister’s eyes so wide, must have been the size of the city moon tonight….Did you get the real good ones? Did you get the good ones? Did you get the real good ones? Did you get me the good ones?

The first single from No Wow, The Kills keenly anticipated second album, tells a familiar tale. Adapted from a Kills diary entry, the song catalogues the craving for and consequent desperate pursuit of that elusive good time. With a nod to late 70’s New York, when the hedonism and excess of disco eclipsed a thriving punk scene, The Good Ones may evoke thoughts of Studio 54 in it’s hey day, but it’s message remains relevant today.

A drum machine sets off a repetitive disco beat, Jamie’s nagging guitar riff drives the melody and the lyrics spell out that endless search for thrills with the incessant chorus, “Did you get the real good ones? Did you get the good ones?”. Like most of the songs on No Wow, The Good Ones was written on a Moog keyboard, and played on a guitar with no reverb added, rendering Jamie’s fuzzed-up riff with a sound akin to throbbing synthesisers.

The Kills debuted the song in a headline appearance in the Carling Tent at Reading Festival back in the summer and included it in their set whilst touring with Franz Ferdinand this autumn. In contrast to her usual on stage persona Alison dons a wide brimmed 70’s hat, stands motionless and spits out the lyrics to an audience of bobbing heads and twitching limbs. The accompanying video, by acclaimed French film-makers Rojo, is also something of a departure for the Anglo-American duo. Performance based, it features a stunning dance routine choreographed by award winning choreographer Rafael Bonachela (currently choreographing Kylie’s tour) and is set in an art gallery happening evocative of Andy Warhol’s Factory. The band themselves perform in front of an installation inspired by legendary multi-media artist Nam June Paik. Additional tracks on the single will be announced shortly. The Kills are currently on tour in the U.S and Japan prior to returning to the U.K in February.
