Radio 4 : New single, Live stream & London date

After a health scare forced RADIO 4 to cancel their November tour, the New York quintet return in February with a new 10” single, NATION (featuring Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry Remixes) due for release 21st February, taken from their Stealing of a Nation album. An exclusive London date precedes the release at ULU on Thursday 17th February.

Singer Anthony Roman explains further: “During The Libertines US tour in October, I experienced stomach ailments that got increasingly worse. Upon doctor’s orders we were forced to take two months off. Now that I’ve been given the all-clear, we are very excited to return to the UK.”

The forthcoming single, NATION, comes complete with remixes by Mad Professor / Darkfantom & Stilzy, featuring Lee Scratch Perry. As serious fans of dub and reggae, RADIO 4 could not be more thrilled with the results.

“The idea of working with Lee Perry seemed so ridiculously improbable that I thought the label was joking!” Anthony says. “Everyone in RADIO 4 has been big fans of his music for a long time. We used to listen to “People Funny Boy” every day and thought about adding it to our live set. Blackboard Jungle is one of my favorite dub records ever and the tracks he did with Bob Marley are the best things Marley did by far – check the version of “Sun is Shining”. I even named my cat after Scratch Perry!”

“As far as the song NATION goes, with the recent results of the election, that song really hits home for me. Singing it on stage since, I realise it has taken on an even stronger identity.”

On the B-side, Glasgow’s rising star on the Soma label, Alex Smoke, gives TRANSMISSION a pulsing re-rub.

Anthony Roman has contributed an essay in a new book, Let Fury Have the Hour – The Punk Rock Politics of Joe Strummer (Nation Books), a collection of writings that chronicle Strummer’s life as a musician and a political activist. Other writers include Chuck D, Tim Robbins, Billy Bragg, Greil Marcus, Lester Bangs and Jim Jarmusch.

RADIO 4 performed a rare acoustic set as part of the CMJ Festival in mid-October. The stream can be heard here: Click to hear
