Radio 4 – State Of Alert (CD Review)

New York’s Radio 4 take a cocktail of punk rock, dance grooves, social comment and give it a sense of urgency and vibrancy that make it irresistible. ‘State of Alert’ is a perfect example of this; there are siren like guitars, a foot stomping beat and an attack on their government (which could easily apply to ours as well) all combined into a great song to dance to, scream to and let off all that steam. ‘State of Alert’ comes from the excellent ‘Stealing Of A Nation’ LP that came out earlier this year.

Also included in this release is an excellent live version of the menacing reggae of ‘Pipe Bombs’ (taken from Radio 4’s debit album ‘Gotham!’) featuring the ever more timely lyrical advice of ‘Pipe bombs can’t be the offering / to bring you close to god’. The live numbers continue as seamlessly ‘Struggle’ takes the lead and energises the listener again after the mesmeric ‘Pipe Bombs’ closes. ‘Struggle’ played live shows Radio 4 at the angriest and funkiest. This is brilliance from start to finish.
