Different For Girls: Women Artists & Female Fronted Bands Cover Joe Jackson

Tribute album or social experiment? Different For Girls takes 14 female-fronted projects and gets them to cover the songs of Joe Jackson. The link being that he wrote a song called, It’s
Different For Girls. Cunning.

After starting out with a disappointing cover of Is She Really Going Out With Him by Elaine K, the album quickly picks up with two very different versions of Got The Time (acoustic with bleeps from Beth Thornley and punk from Fabulous Disaster), an excellent take on On Your Radio from Fiona Lehn and an ambient electronica twist from the compilations title track by Maxine Young. Other highlights come from Idle Mirth (Another World), Mary Lee’s Corvette (Home Town) and the closing, very dark version of Take It Like A Man by darkblueworld.

Whether or not it’s different for girls is not clear but everyone on this compilation has brought something of themselves with them. It’s nice that not one performer has tried to ape Joe Jackson’s style.
