‘From A Basement On A Hill’ is the last album recorded by Elliot Smith; he committed suicide around this time last year. His legacy of critically acclaimed songs still stands in no way diminished by the addition of this posthumous collection. These fifteen lavish, hazy, late Seventies tinged songs are wonderfully simple and effective.

Smith’s voice carries these emotive and personal numbers charismatically as the songs swoop from modern folk to well tempered psychedelic edged rock. Comparisons can clearly be drawn with artists like Nick Drake (‘Let’s Get Lost’) and a lot of early West Coast music; this likeness to past greats shouldn’t blur the fact that this is the last act of a special talent.
