Mortiis is an angry little troll and this is probably why I’ve always avoided listening to him – the prosthetic nose and ears ingrained my preconceptions of him being a Norwegian black metal novelty act. Turns out I was wrong.
Taking his cues from industrial bands like Skinny Puppy, Gravity Kills, Nine Inch Nails and Ministry, this is Mortiis’ first album with a full band (with whom he has toured for the last two years). Also, despite the mask he hides behind, his true feelings and emotions are on display here (like I said, he’s an angry little troll).
As with all industrial acts, this won’t be to everyone’s tastes but if you like loud electronic music, saturated with distortion then this is definitely for you. The Grudge has been put together with great care and skill and, despite what I said at the beginning of this paragraph, the album’s title track will have everyone dancing.
Don’t be fooled by his curious image, Mortiis is a force to be reckoned with.
