So the story goes, Ray ditched his factory job to perform his songs and after only four gigs was signed to Chrysalis. It was the ‘earthiness’ and ‘honesty’ of the songs that apparently won them over. To be honest, I can’t see why.
Buy Trouble from Amazon
This is a collection of rather dreary songs in a slow waltzing style of earnest sounding American music. While there are stylistic nods to Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and the like, it never really works. Now I should, at the risk of being shot by some rabid fan, say that I am one of those people who think Bruce Springsteen is rather over-rated, and I have not been impressed by many of those who followed in his wake. The whole Middle America working class moaning to a tune genre leaves me cold. The especially depressive tone of this album doesn’t do it any favours either, dragging the spirit of the listener further and further down; and his finger nearer and nearer the CD eject button.
