‘Kicking The National Habit’ is the debut album from the innovative duo that make up Grand National. This album is a heady cocktail of the Manchester sound of the Stone Roses, the Happy Mondays, New Order, as well as moments that bring bands like Blur to mind. ‘Kicking…’ is more than a patchwork quilt made of other people’s music though; they have a sound all of their own. From the dreamlike and jangly opener ‘Drink To Moving On’, through the more electronic ‘Talk Amongst Yourselves’ and the floor-stomping ‘Playing In The Distance’, this album has a catchy funk and easy charm.
Even the sudden switch to an up-tempo bastardised ska for ‘Boner’ works incredibly well. The scratched and deeply bassed ‘Peanut Dreams’ brings a feeling of magically mellow haze. Forthcoming single, ‘Cherry Tree’, is almost a full-on dance gospel number if it wasn’t for the dryly sung verses.
Grand National have created an album for any party, it is fun, funky, stylish and above all that, it’s damn good.
