This eclipses all previous chart showings of his career and even the feted work of his previous band The Smiths. Prior to this week’s hugely welcome return, Morrissey’s best showing had been for his first solo single ‘Suedehead’ which debuted at No.5 on 27th Feb 1988. Only three Smith’s singles ever penetrated the UK Top Ten on their original release. These were:

  • Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now (No.10 on 2nd June 1984)
  • Sheila Take A Bow (No.10 on 25th April 1987)
  • This Charming Man (which made a posthumous appearance at No.8 on 15th August 1992).

Sanctuary Records are justly proud of their and Morrissey┬╣s achievement both here and in America. Joe Cokell, Sanctuary Records Group CEO said today, “Morrissey has worked extremely hard in support of the single and albumwhich has obviously paid dividends. The singles chart position proves that Morrissey is still a major force and I look forward to continued success throughout the year for “You Are The Quarry”.

Sanctuary Group Inc Chief Executive Officer Merck Mercuriadis added, “I am delighted for Morrissey as he has worked so hard to get every detail right. His success makes a terrific statement about the partnership we have forged with him in records, management, merchandising, and agency. Everyone at Sanctuary Records Group, Sanctuary Artist Management, Sanctuary / Bravado Merchandising and Sanctuary / K2 Agency has made a great effort with Morrissey to make this happen. Morrissey is not only at the height of his creativity making the best music of his career but he is paving the way for how all great artists will operate in the future”.
