Kinky – Atlas

Kinky are a Mexican five piece who play a unique brand of rock-dance. The UK release of their second album is a reflection of the growing following they are acquiring all over the world. There are four basic elements that seem to have been combined in ‘Atlas'; They have a funk rock element that is akin to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, a sound dance footing that has been likened to the Chemical Brother and Underworld, combine this with a bit of Latin music and a kind of sixties lounge swing and you have their recipe. I hasten to add that not all of these elements are in every song; they have been used wisely and to great effect.

Atlas by Kinky

The album starts with ‘Presidente’, a track that takes power chords, space age keyboards and dance beats. All through there is a husky accented rap in English and Spanish. It undeniably rocks. With every new track the mood changes, becoming a funky Latin backed monologue about walking with headphones for ‘The Headphonist'; a squelchy cocktail of beats and bass for ‘Salta-Lenin-El-Atlas'; the more traditional rock sounds of ‘Minotauro’. The variety of sounds and approaches on the album hold together well and the whole collection flows instead of being a patchwork. Clearly there are many who agree, as ‘Atlas’ is up for two Grammys and four MTV awards.

Kinky are playing a rare UK show at the Royal Festival Hall in London on April 24th as part of the La Linea Festival.
