New album features collaborations with Sigur Ros, Mum and The Black Heart Procession
CITY SLANG RECORDS are stoked (at the very least) to announce the signing of THE ALBUM LEAF, whose new album IN A SAFE PLACE is scheduled for a July 26th release. THE ALBUM LEAF is Jimmy LaValle, described in the US press as a “sound scientist” on more than one occasion, and whose CV includes the acclaimed American instrumental act Tristeza, noise punks The Locust, and recent bass playing duties for cult act The Black Heart Procession.
Taking the name from a Chopin piece, THE ALBUM LEAF’s first album for City Slang is actually Lavalle’s third under the name. IN A SAFE PLACE is remarkable not only for its songs of frail beauty and glacial textures, but also for the cast list LaValle gathered together for the recordings. Members of Sigur Rós, Amina (Sigur Rós’ string section) and The Black Heart Procession all joined the multi-instrumentalist for the three months of recording which took place last year at Sundlaugin Studio, Sigur Rós’ famous studio just outside Rekyjavik in Iceland. Maria Sigfusdottir, formerly of Mum, also guests on the record. LaValle had previously toured with Sigur Rós during their first US tours, and eventually ended up joining them on stage during later tours. Later this year he will support Mum on their forthcoming US tour.
The album sees vocal duties undertaken by LaValle for the first time, while The Black Heart Procession’s Pall Jenkins and Sigur Rós’ Jon Thor Birgisson also take lead vocals for a number of songs.
The full tracklisting is as follows:

Southern California’s quintessential punk rock band, PENNYWISE (Jim
Lindberg- Vocals, Fletcher Dragge – Guitar, Randy Bradbury- Bass, Byron McMackin- Drums), returned in 2003 with their 8th studio album – the stunning, “From The Ashes” that reiterates their position at the top of the punk rock food chain. “From the Ashes” is a fourteen-track onslaught that hits you square in the face and doesn”t let up.
Songs like “Waiting,” “Holiday in the Sun” (previously featured on Epitaph’s Punk O Rama 8 compilation CD) and “God Save the U.S.A.” display this band’s seasoned, politically-informed writing style that just keeps getting better with every album. Formed by guitarist Fletcher Dragge and late bassist Jason Thirsk in 1988, PENNYWISE rose to prominence in the midst of the mid-nineties punk revival. Offering an alternative to their grunge-addled peers, PENNYWISE deliver a positive transcendental message of self-reliance. “Our music exists solely to inspire people,” notes singer and chief lyricist Jim Lindberg. “We want people to hear our music and feel empowered by it.”
Armed with the same belief it held when they started, that punk music can change the world, PENNYWISE have created a punk classic known as “From The Ashes”. And, once again, just to clarify matters, PENNYWISE is not your average, ordinary punk band – try fucking extraordinary.
