Joss Stone, fully 20 stone of black diva,..oh, hang on? She’s a teenager from Devon? Surely, there are laws that say she shouldn’t have a voice like that?
Apparently not. Back from a recent stint in New York where a fuss was kicked up about her singing songs originally written about oppressed and downtrodden black women. The ‘argument’ hanging on the fact she can’t have lived enough to sing the songs properly. Which is rubbish. She has a voice that does the songs justice. I think they are just jealous.
Back to matters in hand though… Very soon Joss will be releasing ‘Fell In Love With A Boy’, a slight twist on the White Stripes track of (nearly) the same name. Comparing this to Jack and Meg’s rendition rendered pointless as Joss’s version is rendered in smooth and squelching funk instead of Detroit Garage rock. On it’s own merits it stands up well. Joss cries, croons and swoops impressively – and this single is all about her voice, despite having The Roots as producers – to create a sure-fire hit that bodes well for her album (?The Soul Sessions’, due soon).
Joss plays the following UK dates:
- Saturday 31st January, Birmingham Carling Academy 2
- Tuesday 3rd February, Manchester University
- Wednesday 4th February, London, Scala
- Thursday 5th February, Bristol Fleece & Firkin
Support on all shows will be up-and-coming Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall.
